The uses and gratifications theory assumes audiences actively seek out media tho satisfy individual needs.

The uses and gratifications theory looks to answer three questions

1. What do people do with the media?

2. What are their underlying motives for using the media?

3. What are the pros and cons of this individual media use?

The different areas of uses and gratification are:

  • information
  • personal identity
  • integration and social interaction
  • entertainment
  • education
  • escapism

Information
  • Seeking advice on practical matters or opinion and decision choices.
  • Satisfying curiosity and general interest.
  • Learning; self-education.
  • Gaining a sense of security through knowledge.
An example of this is the news.

Personal Identity
  • Finding models of behaviour
  • Gaining insight into ones self
  • Role models
An example of this is documentaries.

Entertainment
  • Relaxing
  • Filling time
  • Emotional release
  • Escapism
An example of this is Reality TV.

Integration and social interaction
  • Gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy.
  • Identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging
  • Finding a basis for conversation and social interaction.
An example of this live broadcasted Charity TV shows.

  1. Sam,

While I'm on your blog - I can't seem to find your My Media Summer homework. Where is it?

  2. Try to illustrate uses and gratifications, and target audiences, with specific examples - this makes it easier to understand and remember.
